A supply-only kitchen means arranging installation separately from the product purchase. A retailer installation package adds fitting under the retailer’s stated terms, but you still need to check its exclusions. Compare the complete room project, the people responsible and the aftercare route before deciding which arrangement suits you.
Neither route is automatically cheaper or simpler. A package that looks complete can exclude preparation. An independent quotation can also leave work for you to organise. Put the two scopes side by side.
What changes when you arrange your own fitter?
You become the link between the product order and the installation agreement unless someone explicitly takes that coordination on. Your fitter needs the latest drawings and item list. The supplier needs prompt information about changes or missing products.
Wren’s supply-only FAQ confirms that customers can arrange fitting privately. That is a supplier-specific example, not a statement about every retailer’s terms. If you already have an installation package, check cancellation and amendment terms before making another booking.
An independent arrangement can let you discuss room preparation directly with the installer. It still needs a written scope. Our Wren fitting guide covers the handoff in more detail.
Compare the whole job on one sheet
List every task required to get from today’s room to a usable, finished kitchen. Against each offer, mark included, excluded or not yet confirmed. An unconfirmed item is a question, not a zero cost.
| Question | What to record for either route |
|---|---|
| Who measures? | The person responsible and when the check happens |
| Who prepares the room? | Strip-out, walls, floors and any changes to services |
| Who fits the worktop? | Supplier, template visit, fitting and reconnections |
| Who handles shortages? | Reporting contact, replacements and return visits |
| Who finishes? | Panels, seals, splashbacks, decoration and adjustments |
| Who handles aftercare? | Product contact and installation contact |
Include any applicable VAT and all separate quotations when comparing totals. If appliances are bought elsewhere, add their delivery and installation arrangements too. A discount on cabinets does not settle the cost of fitting the room.
Who owns changes to the plan?
Ask who signs off a revised drawing. Suppose a replacement fridge needs a different housing or an altered sink changes the worktop cut-out. The supplier, fitter and worktop fabricator may all need the update.
Keep one dated version as the agreed plan. Email or message the complete revision rather than describing a change verbally and hoping everyone remembers it. Ask for confirmation of any effect on materials, fitting cost and dates before approving it.
This is especially useful when a showroom revises the order after a site measure. The fitter’s original quote may no longer describe the latest arrangement.
What happens when a product arrives damaged?
Establish the reporting process before delivery. Keep labels, order references and photographs. Follow the supplier’s current instructions and reporting deadlines rather than assuming the installer can sort everything out later.
Ask whether an installation return visit caused by a missing product is included, chargeable or decided case by case. Record the answer. It may be possible to continue other work, but some components determine the position of everything beside them.
Compare aftercare without assuming the guarantees match
Product cover and installation cover are different. Ask which company you contact about a damaged hinge, a door adjustment or an appliance fault. Read the actual exclusions and reporting process for your order.
Matthew 633 is an independent business. A fitting agreement with us is not a retailer’s installation package, and we do not claim retailer approval. We can discuss the scope and aftercare for our work directly.
Which route should you choose?
Choose the arrangement whose total scope, communication and responsibilities you understand. If you want to use an independent fitter, speak to them while the order can still change. If you prefer a retailer package, ask the same practical questions about exclusions and room preparation.
For a Watford-area kitchen, send Dan your plan and ask for a fitting quotation. You can then compare a defined piece of work with the other offer in front of you.
