Planning a Howdens kitchen with an independent fitter

Understand Howdens trade purchasing, plan revisions, fitting quotes and delivery responsibilities before arranging an independent kitchen installation.

If you are considering a Howdens kitchen with an independent fitter, establish who will buy the products, check the design and manage the installation. Howdens sells to the trade, so the purchasing arrangement needs agreeing with the relevant trade professional. Keep product supply and fitting responsibilities clear before the order is placed.

A depot plan is useful for a fitting conversation, but it does not by itself define who is doing every part of the room. Ask about preparation, worktops, appliances and finishing as well as the cabinets.

Understand the purchasing arrangement

Howdens explains its trade purchasing model in its buying guidance. Discuss who will hold the order, how the quotation will be presented to you and who deals with product questions.

Do not assume that every independent fitter has the same purchasing arrangement or will supply every range. Ask directly. If a builder is already managing the order, explain that to the installer so roles are not duplicated.

Keep copies of the agreed specification and the relevant supply terms. Price discussions are clearer when everyone knows which products, accessories and services are included in the figure.

Send the fitter the technical plan

Share the dimensioned drawing, cabinet list, chosen range, worktop details and appliance models. A visualisation shows the appearance, but the installer needs the information that determines how the products fit.

Include photographs of the existing room and anything likely to affect the layout, such as a boiler enclosure, window board or boxed pipework. Say which services are moving and whether the room preparation has already been arranged.

If the design is provisional, mark it that way. The fitter can discuss the scope early, but changes to the cabinet list or room can affect the eventual quotation.

Agree who checks the room before ordering

Ask how the depot’s design information will be checked against site conditions and who resolves any discrepancy. The installer may need to review levels, walls, service positions and clearances that are not obvious in a rendered image.

Pay attention to fillers, end panels and corners. These can be needed for doors and drawers to operate, even if they look like empty space on a plan. Do not remove them from the order to make room for a bigger unit without a design review.

Keep the checked drawing dated and labelled. If a cabinet changes, send the full revision to the fitter and any separate worktop supplier. A message saying “we moved the sink a little” is not an adequate replacement for the revised layout.

Separate fitting from the rest of the renovation

Ask the fitting quotation to state whether it covers assembly where required, cabinet installation, panels, handles, plinths and adjustments. Then list removal, waste, wall preparation, flooring, tiling and other trades separately.

Confirm who supplies and fits the worktop. A specialist surface may need a template visit after the cabinets are ready. Read our quartz templating guide if that applies to the plan.

Use the quote checklist when comparing offers. A single total is not enough to show whether the same job is included by each installer.

Plan delivery and product queries

Agree the delivery date with the people preparing and fitting the room. Confirm storage, unloading arrangements and who checks the delivered items against the latest order. Products arriving locally or quickly does not remove the need for a complete delivery check.

Ask who contacts the depot about shortages or damage and how replacement items affect fitting visits. Keep item references and photographs so the query can be handled precisely.

The delivery checklist helps organise this handoff. Do not assume that a missing part can always be worked around or replaced on the day it is noticed.

Keep the aftercare route clear

Record who handles product concerns and who handles workmanship questions. Retain the supply paperwork, fitting quotation, care instructions and relevant appliance records. Ask which registrations or follow-up tasks are yours to complete.
